If you’ve ever wondered how to realistically and sustainably keep bees year round in Alaska, join Tim Huffman and Anchor Gardens for a two-part workshop at Seed Lab. Tim is passionate about wanting to break Alaska’s dependence on imported California bees and has organized an introduction to sustainable beekeeping in Alaska into a two-part workshop series. In the first workshop he will cover realistic expectations, the gear you will need and methods to use for cold climate, and honey bee biology and colony behavior. In the second workshop he will cover honey bee health and how to manage pests and viruses and also connecting into and developing community support.

This workshop is free, made possible by a grant from Anchorage Soil and Water Conservation District and Anchor Gardens, and open to everyone over 10yrs of age. Two, two-part workshops will be offered on Jan. 7th and 14. Choose from Session One ( 12-2pm) or Session Two (2:30-4:30pm). Registration is for both sessions in the chosen time slot.

About Tim Huffman

Tim moved to Alaska from Oregon in 1984. His many jobs include State employment, commercial fishing, remote sport fish guiding, high school and college volleyball officiating, golf course employee, and rearing angelfish for local aquarium supply stores.

In 2018, Tim began keeping bees in backyards across Anchorage, and has been the beekeeper for 49th State Brewing since 2020. He successfully overwinters 80% of his colonies, and uses them to create additional colonies with locally mated queens. Tim began the season with ten overwintered colonies; he’s going into winter with 18. 100% of his 2023 honey harvest came from colonies that survived winter.
